THE LORD'S PRAYER (SO CALLED) INTRODUCTION

The Lord's Prayer

(So called)

by Grant Alford

Over the next few entries I want to look at what is commonly referred to as “The Lord's Prayer” but which someone else has pointed out really ought to be called the “Disciples Prayer”. This “outline” and thoughts came to me some years ago, and I have occasion to revisit them from time to time to remind myself of the simplicity and profundity of what a relatively few words contain. The context of the “Prayer” needs to be looked at briefly and one or two general comments made before launching into the “'study” itself. But lest I never get beyond the introduction or the outline, let me give you this first.

(I truly believe this was “from the Lord” at least for me at the time, and maybe the “proof” that it was meant to be shared was in the beautiful alliteration that came “of itself” without any effort on my part.!) Compare
 the two passages in:

Matthew 6:9-13(NIV)                                    Luke 1:2-4.(NIV)

RELATIONSHIP
Our Father in heaven                                    Father

Give us today our daily bread.                    Give us each day our daily
                                                                     bread.

                                                                    everyone who sins
                                                                    against  us.

REFUGE

And lead us not into temptation,                 And lead us not into
But deliver us from the evil one.                 temptation.
